It's time for the quarterly meeting of the San Antonio Celiac Support Group! We are going to have a pot luck followed by a general meeting with an emphasis on getting your ideas about what we should be doing. We have invited the newly formed ROCKSA (Raising Our Celiac Kids San Antonio) to attend and suggested they might gather early to get acquainted with each other.

So here's the details:

When: Monday, 12 May
ROCKSA: 6:30 pm
Pot Luck: 7 pm
Where: Covenant Presbyterian Church, 211 Roleto Drive, Kitchen area.

If you have a celiac child, ROCKSA invites you to come at 6:30 pm and learn more about what the group is about and how to join.

The potluck will begin promptly at 7 pm, and then the general meeting will begin at dessert time. But you've never been to a pot luck and are wondering just what is expected of you? Anne Barfield, our new chair, was asked this question recently and responded:

"Potluck items are pretty simple. You can bring whatever you want to bring. Sometimes we are heavy on dessert, but there is always quite a mixture. The idea is to bring a dish you have learned to make or that you like a lot, or that you want to share information about. Some people might make a pan of brownies from a mix, or from scratch or bring something they ordered from one of the gf places. Most dishes are like a one pot casserole or pie or cake or batch of cookies or a salad. Could be rolls or a loaf of sliced bread.

We ask that they bring a LIST OF INGREDIENTS, whether they bring the recipe or not. Some people are lactose intolerant and some are soy or casein intolerant, so they need to know what else is in the item. We just put the list of ingredients (and put your name on it) next to the dish, and we ask each to bring their own serving utensils, so we don't get spoons mixed up and in the wrong dish.

For you and your kids I would recommend something that your kids like that is gluten free, because other parents are interested in expanding their culinary (gf) horizons too."

We are starting a Sample GF Suitcase to help newly diagnosed celiacs on their first visits to the supermarket or health food store. Please bring the empty containers and packages of your favorite gluten-free products to the meeting to help get this project off the ground. The Suitcase will be brought to all meetings so that new members can see what the products look like. This will be a big help in finding them in the store.

Please note that due to road construction, the usual approach to the church is blocked. Fortunately, it is still quite easy to get to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 211 Roleto Drive. As you proceed west from Blanco Road on the I410 access road, take the turn to the right onto Northwest Military Highway. At the first traffic light, turn left onto Lemonwood, then left again onto Roleto. The church wil be on the your right. enter the church through the door at the southwest corner of the parking lot, close to the sanctuary; this will elad directly to the kitchen area. Of course, if you are coming south on Northwest Military Highway, turn right onto Lemonwood.
