Hi,

My pharmacist friend sent me a copy from "Pharmacist's Letter" on celiac
disease. I'd be surprised if you can access it free, but you could try, so
I'll summarize. Document # 201115, November 2004, Vol. 20. I summarized
much
of the article. Most is old news to us, but also some good stuff. After
the
summary, I listed all the resources, on-line and one book, plus phone
numbers
and email addresses where given. I hope this helps some of you. It will be
especially useful to the new people. Let me know too if you really need a
copy
and can't get it on-line. I'll make copies and mail it to you. Might be
useful for your doc if you can't get help.

This is a lot of typing, let me know if there are errors. Diane

It starts with a long list of symptoms that I haven't included. Could be
useful
for a doc who doesn't believe you.

"In patients with suspected celiac disease, serological (antibody) testing
is
performed. If testing and clinical presentation suggest celiac disease, a
small intestinal biopsy is then necessary to make a diagnosis."

Notes that excipients in drugs can be from a wheat source and include
unspecified starch or pregelatinized starch, dusting powder, flour, or
wheat.
Others include dextri-maltose and caramel coloring (if barley malt). Some
starch derivatives are not from unallowed sources, but not always.
Identifying
GF meds is a challenge for both patients and health-care professionals.
Verify
meds periodically. Know the lot number when checking on your meds.

You might need other supplements like iron, folate, vitamin B12, etc until
diet
is stabilized and intestinal tract heals. There is less B vitamin in
gluten-free foods. You might also be lacking in fiber. Newly diagnosed
patients should have their bone density checked, supplements might be
needed.

"Many patients with celiac disease also have some degree of splenic atrophy.
Pneumococcal vaccination should be considered for these patients.....Some
experts recommend giving pneumococcal vaccine to celiac patients over the
age
of 50 years."
