So sorry this is SO LATE. (remodeling) This is a summary of what I received on "CD among family members." Thanks so much for sharing.

From Linda in Mississippi: "The specialists say it is between 10 and 15 percent that a Celiac will have a child with CD."From Kathy in Minnesota: "My 3 ½ year old was first diagnosed at 18 months, then myself last year with no symptoms, followed by my mom and now my sister. I have three other siblings that haven't been tested yet."

From Joy in New Mexico: "I don't know about other families, but my brother and I are both Celiac and my daughter and now possibly my granddaughter. A second cousin in Ireland has just been diagnosed."

From Betty: "In my family, of the brothers and sisters, two out of five have celiac. I think another one might but he has not been tested."

From Gene in California: "My parents had three children. Two of the three are biopsy confirmed as celiacs (myself and my sister). My brother died earlier this year with no evidence of CD. I have five children and five grandchildren with no celiac to date."

From Charlie in South Carolina: "I returned from S.E.A in 1966 with infectious hepatitis, diagnosed with T-1 diabetes in 1971, DH in 1992, CD in 1996, and psoriasis in 2000. The Diabetes Forecast has written two articles on autoimmune diseases and says that at least 5 percent of all T-1 diabetics have CD. None of my relatives have any of these diseases."
From Lillian in Illinois: "I have CD and most of my 7 children and quite a few of my 14 grandkids and now my great-grandkids as well as 2 sisters and 2 brothers now show definite symptoms. The youngest brother died with celiac at 17."

From Cheryl: "My husband's mother has DH; older brother and my husband have CD; younger brother hasn't been tested. My husband's maternal grandfather died of esophageal cancer, which could have been caused by reflux from undiagnosed CD. My husband's recent biopsy showed a small hiatal hernia and a very irritated esophagus, even without symptoms of heartburn. "

From Barbara: "In our family, we have the following: Father positive for CD; mother negative; 4 of 5 children positive; 2 of 7 grandchildren are positive with others too young to accurately test."

From Natalie: "The stats have remained the same for a while: 20% rate among siblings; 10% among family members-cousins or closer; 90% in identical twins."

From Jacquil: "A leading GI specialist (Dr. Peter Green) said the occurrence is 10%."

From Renee: "I was diagnosed at 70 years of age, two years ago. That was after being diagnosed with IBD. My two adult children then went in for blood testing as did my brother. All came back with positive blood tests with no symptoms. All did a follow-up endoscopy. My brother had totally blunted villi but since his Doctor told him at his age, he could ignore the diet (ach!), he chose to do that. My daughter began developing some stomach distress and had a positive biopsy showing a little villi involvement and is on a GF diet now, doing fine. My son had a negative biopsy but two pathologists read it and said the samples were poorly oriented."

From Beth: "I am the mom of seven celiac children. All seven of my children have been diagnosed with CD. One was diagnosed by biopsy-his blood test had been negative; five by blood tests, and one by diet. The one by diet was the real miracle. He has aspergers disorder, which is a high function form of autism. He was in special education before the diet and after 6 months on the diet, he is in regular ed and doing great! He couldn't read at all before and now loves to read and reads as well as anyone in his class or better. All my children have been diagnosed by two doctors as having CD. My blood test came back negative but I went on the diet and I do have physical symptoms when I eat gluten-so I don't. My husband's test came back positive. My mother also tested positive as well as one of her sisters. No one else in the family has been tested."

From Donna: "I had my uncle's family tested in the Utah gene study and out of six children, three were positive. In my family, I am celiac from birth, my father was negative, and my mother is deceased. It is my father's line and maybe mothers as well. I have four brothers and only two of them did the test and they were negative but the other two were the ones I wanted to be tested and they did not."
