Hi, All

I know this might not be a popular thing to bring up, since many folks on the List are currently taking Fosamax. But here goes......

I recently contacted Dr. Cynthia Rudert, who many of you know is an Atlanta gastroenterologist who specializes in Celiac disease. She also travels the country lecturing on the disease. I have visited with her on many occasions via the phone and e-mail. I live in Texas and have been unable to meet her in person. She is extremely personable and very concerned with helping get the word out about Celiac disease. I've had an ongoing discussion with her about bone density tests and what to do when the numbers keep showing more and more of a decline into osteoporosis. When I asked her about taking Fosamax, she said that she recently attended a conference in Denver and heard Dr. Peter Green speak. She said that he does NOT believe people with Celiac disease should take this drug. She did not elaborate, but I'm sure it's due to the harmful effects it can have on the digestive tract.

This is something I felt many of you might want to take note of, coming from such an expert source. For those who are "on the line," as I am, in making a decision about drug therapy, it might help you in making a wise choice.

Dr. Rudert also suggested that I look into Pioneer Vitamins for my calcium/magnesium source. Neither she, nor I, have any connection to this company, so the suggestion is not for monetary gain. I looked them up at www.pioneernutritional.com and was very interested in their product line, which is completely gf. I then called them at 1-800-458-8483. Since I didn't know if the calcium formulation would work well for me (some I can't seem to handle digestion wise), they sent me a large packet of samples, plus loads of info.

I'm hoping this supplement will have better absorbtion in my body and my bone density tests will reflect that in the future.

For all of you struggling with low bone density results, my heart goes out to you. I just hope we all can make the best decisions about what route to take in keeping our bones strong. Lots of us do everything correct, as in weight bearing exercises, eating healthy with lots of foods high in calcium, and getting outside in the sun for the wonderful Vitamin D. Sometimes you can do all that and still have bones that become thin and brittle. We just need to persue every avenue available to us before resorting to drug therapy.
