First meeting of the Southwest Suburban Celiac Support Group.

Stephen Holland, M.D., a stomach doctor in Naperville, has started a
support group for patients with Celiac disease and other disorders
related to gluten and wheat intolerance. The group is named the
Southwest Suburban Celiac Support Group.

Celiac disease is a disease where an autoimmune problem is triggered by
the ingestion of wheat and certain other foods. Once thought to be
uncommon, diseases related to gluten have been found to be much more
common than previously thought. About 1 in 100 people are affected.
Patient support groups are important so patients can share tips
regarding coping with these problems. At this time this is the only
support group for this common condition in any of the suburbs west or
south of Chicago.

Patients with Celiac disease, Diabetes Herpetiformis, gluten
intolerance, and other conditions that benefit from wheat and gluten
restriction are welcome to attend. Children and adults are welcome, as
well as family members of patients with these problems.

The first meeting will be held at the new Naperville Public Library on
95th street on Thursday, October 16 from 7 to 9 PM. The library is on
95th street, just east of Route 59 on the south side of the street.
There is no charge to attend. A library card is not needed to attend.

Featured at the meeting will be a presentation by Sueson Vess of
Special Eats, a cooking instructor who specializes in teaching people
how to cook wheat free.

Information about the meeting is available online at
www.napervillegi.com/celiac. Dr. Holland may be reached at
630-357-4463. Sueson Vess of Special Eats may be reached at 846-4605.
