RE: rice krispies and malt flavoring:
SUMMARY replies:

Many of you wrote that you have found malt flavoring NOT to be ok for you
because malt comes from barley. Others wrote that you avoide ANYTHING with
malt or barley completely! A few of you wrote that you are ok with Rice
Krispies. The letters below seems to offer some good advice. Some are from
the archives (last ones from 1999; I do not know if Kellogg's has changed
their method of making malt flavoring--as they indicated in the 1999 reply--
or not. Especially not the link inside the first message below from a food
chemist.

I have the same cookbook but it the section that talks about flavoring, I
believe she refers to the distillation of the alcohol that is in vanilla.
If you call the Kellogg people I'm sure they will inform you that Rice
Krispies is not gluten free. Malt often comes from Barley. Anything with
Malt in it, I would stay away from. I order Krispy Krisp Rice cereal from
Kinnickinick in Canada and it's very good and Gluten Free.
Hope this helps. Nancy

Subject: Kellogg's cereal
I recently sent a note to Kellogg's because the home page of their website
says "Serving a Nation's Health" and so I just asked if this was true why
they couldn't make their cereals (i.e. Rice Krispies, CornFlakes) without
barley again. I know there has been a post about these 2 cereals containing
very little of "barley water wash" and that if you aren't overly sensitive
you probably are OK to eat them, but still how do we know how much is too
much in the end for us!--Anyway this is what I received back from Kellogg's
today----Amy
From KELLOGG’S
The cereals we produce use do a barley wash and our cereals contain minute
amounts that are found acceptable by the celiac society,
Kind Regards Marie
Is this true about the celiac society??? If so, are these 2 cereals in
particular OK for us or do we need to first work on the Celiac society
before we even think about working on the companies and the labeling?
Just wanted your opinions!Amy

Subject: summary - gluten tolerance/safe cereals
Hi everyone -Last week I asked if ingesting small amts. of gluten by a
non-sensitiveceliac, damages the villa. The OVERWHELMING response was "of
course". As Istated in my question, I suspected I knew the answer before I
posed the question. Several offered suggestions for gf cereals:
Barbara's Fruit Sweetened Corn Flakes
Health Valley Blue Cornflakes
Health Valley Rice Crunch-ems
Brown Rice Crisps (similar to Rice Krispies)
Erewhon's Rice Twice
Natre's Path Honey'd Corn Flakes
New Morning Cocoa KrispiesKellog's Corn Pops
(the person providing me with this info said, and I quote..."if you can
stand the lines" ) I have no idea what that means. At any rate, I'll stay
away from even the smallest amounts of gluten. --Linda in Savannah

Subject: Kellogg's summary #2
Well I finally heard back from Kellogg's regarding the "celiac society"that
said the barley wash was "OK" in the Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes. This is
the reply I got:
Dear Amy
Thank you for contacting Kellogg's Ask the Nutritionist.Kellogg's have
worked closely with the UK Coeliac Society who are awareof the small amount
of malt flavouring in Kellogg's Rice Krispies and Kellogg's Corn Flakes. As
you mentioned coeliacs do have different levels of tolerance and inthe UK
coeliac society literature to members, they advise members whoare super
sensitive to malt flavourings to be wary of consuming our cereals. In summary
the UK coeliac society recommends that super sensitive coeliacs need to
avoid our malt flavourings but for the general celiac population our corn
and rice based products are suitable. We recognize that advice for coeliacs
varies throughout the world and for those reasons we rely on the UK coeliac
society to pass on the appropriate advice. For information on the US range
of Kellogg's brands we suggest you contact our Head Office 800 9621413
Thank you for contacting Kellogg's Ask the Nutritionist
I called this 800 # and talked to the US Kellogg's--she says that themalt
flavoring they use is a combination of barley sprouts and corn. She said she
would send my request for them to change this to just corn to the right
department. Maybe if a lot of us called asking the same thing we could get
them to change it back so at least these 2 cereals would be GF. Amy West
