I got 1 response from the list,she wasn't sure about the modified food
starch either but suggested that it could have been the buckwheat pancake
mix, did I use Arrowhead pancake mix? It has gluten in it? I did not use the
pancake mix, but I did use plain buckwheat flour from Arrowhead Mills.

I emailed the Meadows Gold Dairies, and got a very fast response:

Betty,
Our buttermilk and its ingredients are gluten free. I have attached a list
of gluten free products that are manufactured in Salt Lake City, Utah, by
Meadow Gold Dairies.

Please note that products do vary from location to location, so you need to
make sure that the products that you are buying, in this case buttermilk,
came from our plant. The plant code # for us is 49-07, which should be
printed on the cartons next to the best by date.
