Thanks to all of you that responded.  Most of you thought it is a vitamin deficiency. Vitamin 12, Folic acid, lack of iron, Vitamin B.

One said to use salt water.  Druggist did not recommend that.

One said she uses Camphor Phenique but the druggist said I could not put that on my tongue.

Guess I will contact my Boston doctor as I don't want to drive 2 hours for a sore tongue.
