In the September edition of OPRAH magazine there is a feature
called Satellite Sisters where five sisters give their advice on a
selected topic. This month the topic (page 87) was dealing with
unwanted overtures. As examples they stated, "Your dull office mate
eager for a girls' night out. The neighbor with the gluten-free children
itching to join your mothers group. How do you respond to uninvited
overtures?"
I have e-mailed OPRAH magazine expressing my outrage. I waited 24
hours so I could do this calmly :) Here is an excerpt of my response:
"Now I can't for the life of me fathom where the problem is here. My
sister has two beautiful children who happen to have celiac disease and
therefore must follow a gluten-free diet. Her children love the beach,
swimming and are award-winning gymnasts. My sister is a funny, warm,
energetic mother and restaurant owner who bakes desserts for her
restaurant. Please explain to me why in the world she would not be
welcome in your mothers' group?"
I also quoted some facts about celiac disease and requested a future
article detailing how it affects individuals and families. I'm sure
there are many on this list who can do this much more eloquently than I
did. I invite you to submit your comments to the address below.
