My wife was diagnosed w/CD, by her mother no less, in 1967, after 18 months
of testing done to explain her malabsorption/weight loss at the age of 3.
After she spoke with her physician, he had non-clinically confirmed the CD
and with a gluten-free diet, she improved drastically. Her physician stated
that she would eventually "outgrow" the CD.

Be age 10, she started eating gluten-containing foods, without any
symptomology. She did this for 20 years, without any CD associated problems,
until I (her boyfriend) was deployed to Saudi Arabia. She started exhibiting
symptoms once the war started. This continued without diagnosis until after
we were married (total of 18 months)

She was diagnosed with CD via blood tests and a biopsy. Reactivating the
gluten-free diet improved her conditions drastically (as before).

When we attended the Physician's Conference in 1995 (at Univ of Maryland esp.
for Gastroentrologists), it was stated that the "typical" CD pathology was
changing to support subclinical phases of the disease. It was stated that
new evidence showed that CD can go into subclinical "remission" which would
not demonstrate any outside signs of CD in the patient, and can activate
again into a clinical presentation. Though the subclinical phase does not
rule out extended damage to a variety of bodily systems, it would not present
itself as a CD case, because the patient would not be exhibiting symptoms or
associated problems (like DH, gastro-problems, etc).

I have the handouts of the conference (at home). I'll try to post those
sessions that pertain to this discussion as soon as I can.
