Greetings All!

I received several responses to my comment about west coast Trader Joe's stores not carrying the rye-less rye bread! First off, I just have to say that it's funny, isn't it, how "the grass is always greener" elsewhere?! Here I am lamenting that I can't get the bread, but many people on this list (in other countries, of course, but also within the US) don't even have a Trader Joe's, so they're missing out on more than the bread. And as envious as I am of those on the east coast for the fabulous stores, products and restaurants they seem to have, a few east coasters mentioned that they would love to have my California weather! That's the main reason I can't stand the thought of leaving the state, although I am enthralled with the natural beauty and the cultures of the other states. There are always trade-offs, no?

On with the summary! It appears that many of the stores on the east coast don't carry this bread either, as I had two responses from PA and one from MD that said that they couldn't find it at their stores and were told that it was probably a west coast product. The person in MD even called the east coast HQ and was told by their rep that he'd never heard of the product! The person who introduced us all to the existence of this bread purchased it in a Chicago suburb, and I had a response from another person who has purchased the bread in a Chicago store. The bread is listed on the east coast GF pamphlet on their web site, so perhaps it's on an introductory trial in Illinois and will eventually make its way to the other east coast stores, and hopefully on to the west coast. A few of the responders were also west coasters who had gone to their local Trader Joe's to find the bread and made the same discovery as I did.

A couple of people mentioned another rye-less bread:

"I always purchase my rye-less rye bread from Enjoy Life Foods (www.enjoylifegoods.com); it is a bigger slice than Trader Joe's (although still smaller than the gluten version) and you can buy it online but my hfs carries it; it has caraway seeds and tastes just like the real thing. It must be toasted thoroughly to taste good and have the correct consistency, like almost all gf breads."

"I think that the rye-less-rye at Trader Joe's is the same as Enjoy Life Foods, Rye-less Rye bread. Maybe you can find that or go to their website www.enjoylifefoods.com. Their (rye) bread is my favorite GF bread."

A couple of people also mentioned they have, and provided in one case, a bread machine recipe for rye-less rye bread.

Thanks to all for your comments and helpful suggestions. I will write to Trader Joe's this weekend, emphasizing the interest in this bread by the Celiac community across the US and will let y'all know when I receive a response from them.

All the best,

~Tamara in Sacramento, CA
