I do not know if this has been mentioned before. I only ran across
this today. Hopefully, especially for those of you in earlier time
zones, this can be responded to in time. What it is, is an easy way
to write to your congressperson regarding a vote today in the House
of Representatives. The bill being voted on is the H.R. Bill 4167,
the "National Uniformity for Food Act". This vote, if passed, will
eliminate current food safety food labels, not only regarding
allergens, but also those that are likely to cause cancer, birth
defects, or mercury poisoning. It would also prevent citizens in
local communities and states from passing laws requiring that
genetically engineered foods and ingredients be labeled. This would
efficiently undo the little, but important progress that has been
made in food labeling laws, which have added wheat as one of the
common allergens. Obviously, this affects all of us, and even if
this vote is happening today, a response from such a large community
as ours would have to have some positive sort of impact. The letter
is already written, & you can edit to add your own comments, as I
did, or just send it as is. It only takes a minute to fill out your
personal information and it's definitely worth a read if nothing
else. Knowledge is power. Have a great gluten free day all.
