 A big thanks to all who responded to my question.  The overwhelming verdict is that they are NOT gluten free.  (the sad part is the person who told me got her information from a hospital dietician!). 
One person contacted Kellogg's and they grow their own barley.  They said it is real barley (as is in most of their cereals.)
Oh well, at least I know the  facts now.
