Summary of comments:

* It happens to me, too. It's said to be an allergic reaction to
p-phenylenediamine in the hair color- look for it in the label.

* I had that happen, but it was because as I grow older my scalp
becomes more sensitive to the chemicals. I would check with a trusted hair
salon. It may cost more, but you will avoid scalp burning and other
chemical reactions. I finally gave up and I have had so many comments on my
"natural" hair.

* I use Nutrisse hair color every six weeks without issue. The
manufacturer told me it was gluten free in Feb. 2006.

* I have not had this problem. I use Garnier Nutrisse hair color.

* I have the same problem.

* Be very careful, I used the one at the salon and it had wheat in
it. My scalp absorbed it and I had a really bad gluten reaction. Loreal
seems to be OK but I have switched to a brand in the health food store that
seems to be the best.

* Actually I not only had bumps on my scalp, I also had digestive
problems. As it turns out, my hair dresser had been using Redkin color for
years, along with Redkin shampoo, mousse, and hair spray, all containing
wheat and wheat starch per the label. I called my beautician and she found
a hair color containing soy and not wheat (do not know the name) and
everything cleared up and I feel fine. I have heard repeatedly that you
cannot absorb topical solutions that contain gluten into your blood stream
BUT I totally disagree.

* It has nothing to do with the gluten, since you have to ingest
gluten to react, and then, if you're prone to the skin version of celiac,
the digestive reaction causes your skin to break out. So putting gluten on
our head, isn't going to make us break out. This came from doctors and
professionals who have replied to the list before.

* I have had no reaction to L'Oreal Feria hair colour, both regular
and power reds series.

* I think it is the peroxide - I break out as well.....I do not
think it has anything to do with gluten - try rinsing the dye out before 20
minutes I take benadryl before I dye as well.....

* Gluten can not enter through the skin. It has to be ingested by
mouth. Unless you had sores on your head, or you may have had a reaction to
something in the color. I use Clairol for gray hair, and never have a
problem.

* I've used Clairol Natural Instincts haircolor. I can't guarantee
that it's gluten free although but I've never had a problem with welts....
only a little itching if I leave it on too long

*         natural insticts is gf

I went to Wild Oats and bought an all natural, hypoallergenic hair color
called Herbaceuticals and will try that. Herbatint is another I found out
there and you can actually order through Amazon. Since the skin is the
largest organ in the body (fact), and if the doctors use patches on the skin
to administer things like nitroglycerine and birth control, it seems logical
to me that placing a toxin on my scalp could cause a reaction. When I first
suspected that I had a problem with gluten, I moved all of my wheat flour
out of the cupboard. Just the bits of flour that floated in the air caused
my eyes to swell and the headache to set in. I have a similar reaction when
I brush a horse, and I've had the allergy shots they do for testing to prove
I'm allergic.

Am I Celiac? Well, I turned myself inside out after accidentally eating some
chicken with barley malt flour in the skin seasoning, so I'm thinking yes.
Am I gluten allergic? So my friend who is a gastroenterologist thinks based
on the reaction I had to breathing in a few specs of flour while moving the
bags. I'm thinking I'm both.
