Below this email message is the response from General Mills to my protest
about GMO corn and rice in their products. You can read the link they
provided and then look at some or all of the following and decide for
yourself.

Here's a brief summary of what's going on:

There are two main types of GMO produce that are cause for worry. Not all
GMOs are created equal and some may well be benign.

1) RoundUp ready rice and corn (produced by Monsanto) confers resistance to
the herbicide RoundUp (also produced by Monsanto) so that the herbicide can
be applied to fields, killing weeds but not the crop. The trouble is that
the weeds become resistant such that larger doses of herbicide are required
resulting in alarming levels of the herbicide in the food that gets to
market. So development of new varieties is underway, such as 2,4,D
resistance. Goody.

The other main type of GMO contains a toxin (from Bacillus thurengensis or
b.t.) to a worm that is a pest to some crops. The toxin is a protein that
can cause allergic reactions and it has been found to damage the intestines
of mice and other rodents in studies, in the same way it kills the worm, by
poking holes in the intestinal wall. And more.

The first site has a large compilation of studies all in one place (though
some are not relevant to this issue), so I trimmed down the links I was
going to supply.

>Originated by Consumer: I was thrilled when General Mills came out with
gluten free cereals- my favorite corn and rice chex in great flavors. But I
want General Mills to know that I will no longer be purchasing them as I
don't know whether they contain GMO corn or rice- I suspect that they most
certainly do. I will stick to the limited number of organic cereals
available to me. I hope enough people do this to affect General Mills'
bottom line enough for them to respond to consumers wish to know what is in
their food.
