Cheryl in PA recently posted that the August 2004 DIABETES FORECAST had a
story on celiac & diabetes. FYI- There is also a 5 page story in the summer
2004 COUNTDOWN magazine from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation that
features the story of my 21 yr old daughter's unexpected diagnosis. I
pushed her endocrinologist to have her screened, after hearing of other
asymptomatic type 1s being diagnosed with celiac (never expecting her to
actually BE positive!!). I've since mailed copies of the article to doctors
who had previously treated her for all the "symptoms" which we'd
erroneously attribted to "just diabetes". A former hospital social worker,
a long-time diabetic himself, wrote back to thank me, saying that he
personally was completely unaware of this connection, desp
ite having a
private practice counseling diabetics, many of whom were grappling with
depression!.
This is well-timed media coverage coming on the heels of the NIH
Celiac Consensus Conference last week which repeatedly mentioned the type 1
diabetes/celiac connection. Not only did many newspapers run the AP story
about celiac having been underdiagnosed, but as Andrea already posted here,
even the Wall Street Journal ran a story lauding the (hopefully) soon-to-be-
passed Food Labeling Act & mentioning celiac disease. And while
checking "google news", I found the Consensus Conference article posted to
a newsletter for Administrators of Laboratories, which should be a BIG step
hopefully in remedying THAT particular obstacle to accurate diagnoses.
To save bandwidth, I'm not including my (lengthy) personal notes from
the 3 day NIH conference, but if anyone would like to see them, e-mail me
se
parately & I'd be happy to share what I'd already posted at the Delphi
forum.
Regards
Renee in Phila
