Several days ago, I asked if anyone had experienced dry eyes, lips, etc.
I received several replies to me directly. I am still receiving some
from individuals asking if I have received replies. Since it is good for
all of you to hear the answer to a question presented, I thought I would
summarize what I received. THANK YOU ALL WHO RESPONDED!
The following is not meant to be medical advice or fact--only what others
have learned through reading, etc.

(1) The main suggestion mentioned was "Sjogren's syndrome." This is a
chonric disease in which the immune system turns on the body, attaching
the mucus-secreting glands and diminishing the production of tears,
saliva, or both. The cause is unknown, but both hereditary factors and
viruses are thought to play a role in stimulating the autom=immune
process. It affects women roughly nine times as frequently as men. A
blood test can be performed to determine this disease. Some said
medicine is only used in more severe cases. The emphasis is in keeping
the eyes lubricated through artificial-tear preparations. There is not
as much available for mouth--mouth wash or salica substitutes.

(2) Others have mentioned the dryness can be in conjunction with chronic
inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid disease, scleroderma, or
systemic lupus.

(3) Drinking more water was suggestions since our intestines may still
be inflammed, etc., and are overcompensating with the body fluid.

(4) Another suggested cutting back on salt intake. Our diet can lean
toward salty things if not careful--mine sure does.

(5) There are also 3 WWW sites regarding this subject if more
information is needed. I apologize but do not have those addresses with
me today. I will post them if anyone is interested.

When I called my GI doctor, the nurse said he said sjogren's wasn't
connected to CD. Guess it is one of those "doctors don't know" kind of
thing. Frustrating. Sorry about the length but I have had such a
response about this that I wanted to share. Again, this is not medical
advice. Have a great day! SMILE AT SOMEONE--IT'S CONTAGIOUS!
