Dear Listfriends,

Thank you all who responded regarding my question of whether I should
invest in a food vaccum. The overwhelming response was YES. Of 16 who
responded, 14 were very enthusiastic and happy with the product. Prices
ranged from $100-$190, and several people pointed out that "you get what you
pay for." The more expensive food savers did a better job of sealing, and
also sealed jars as well as bags. The following appliances were mentioned,
along with the price paid and where purchased, if mentioned:

       Foodsaver Plus (2 mentions)
Foodsaver Compact II by Tilia $190 (2 mentions)
       Freshlock Turbosealer, (www.target.com)
Foodsaver by Tilia $129 (2 mentions)
       Foodsaver System, Sam's Club $119
       Foodsaver, QVC $100
       Foodsaver, Costco, $180

Some of these may be the same machine.

Several people mentioned that baked goods should be frozen first, or
they will be sucked down to a small size by the vacuum process. Also,
several QVC shoppers spoke highly of that company's customer support.
Another person said that she liked the machine, but it turned out to be more
work to use than she had expected. It doesn't work well for rice and pasta,
and juicy stuff is extra work. You must first freeze, then seal. Juice can
seep out during sealing and make a mess. One respondent said that she got
hers as a gift, but would not hesitate to buy one herself.

Thank you all for your replies. This was the first step in my
purchasing process. The next one is to get to a store to actually look at
one. BTW, the two responses that were not positive were 1) a request for a
summary to the list, and 2) the opinion that he/she had frozen foods for
years without one, and "I think that you do not need to spend the money."
However, no one who had one was unhappy with theirs, or regretted buying it.
Most people were very enthusiastic users.

Again, thanks to you all for your most helpful responses.
