Dr Atkins, the diet md, was the first one I ever ran into who rountinely advocated digestive enzymes.  He tested everyone to see if they were producing enough...you had to swallow a little monitor which spewed out info for 24 hours before it left the system.  He used to flat say out that everyone over age 35 should be taking digestive enzymes with each meal.
