Summary to the question "Is face paint gluten free?"

Response #1:
It is my opinion that tempra paint should never be used on people. It works
fine for wood or cloth, but it is not designed for people.
If you are hiring a quality face painter they will probably use Snazaroo
paint. There may be other brands which are also good but I am most familiar
with Snazaroo. Real clowns never use tempra paint because it permanently
stains clothes, cracks and tends to fall off after it drys, and because it
is it is not
hypoallergenic. <http://www.snazaroo.com/>http://www.snazaroo.com/

Here is a quote from Snazaroo's web site:
... concerning the use of craft paints and acrylic paints as a face
painting product. ... The bottom line is one should not use any paint on
the face or skin that does not have a FDA ingredient approval and is
regulated as a cosmetic. To be extra safe you should also look for a face
paint that also has a "Child Toy Safety Rating".
There are ingredients in acrylic paints that are banned for use in any
food, drug or cosmetic. That alone makes them unsafe. Period.

I don't know if Snazaroo is GF, but I'm sure they would be happy to tell you.

Response #2:
I highly recommend Krylon face paint. It is Gluten free, water based and
very easy to use. You can buy it from a theatrical makeup store or order it
over the Internet.

This is from <www.gfcfdiet.htm>www.gfcfdiet.com under school
supplies...Sometime I think they may mix the tempra paints with a bit of
liquid soap so they don't crack as easily and wash off easier. Unless the
child has DH, it shouldn't be a gluten concern.

Lastly, I found this from a websearch:
Powdered paint formulas are really just paint formulas without the liquid
ingredient, namely the water. Typical formulas contain the following solid
ingredients: pigment (to provide the color) clay (thickens the paint when
water is added) "binder" (a polymer that forms a film when it dries,
typically corn starch or dextrin) preservative (powder that will destroy
any bacteria or mold that is introduced) "filler" (extra solid stuff added
to give the paint some volume and does not serve any particular purpose
otherwise, such as calcium carbonate or another clay, etc.)
