I've been googling and searching the archives and am going straight to you
folks for an answer. Many people say they get sick after eating gluten, and
I wonder just what is meant by "sick."

I have long suspected that I am more susceptible to actual illnesses after
ingesting gluten and after 3 identifiable episodes in two months, I am now
convinced that it is much more than a coincidence that I get actually ill
after a gluten episode. I became exposed in each case while visiting with
friends and family who "knew" about gluten but didn't get it quite right and
I was too trusting. In every case, I get a migraine after a few days but in
addition:
episode #1: UTI with fever and chills after a few days
episode #2: flu-like symptoms within a week (nothing I could put my
fingers on but felt extremely lousy (achy and lethargic)
episode #3: came down with a very bad cold and bronchitis within a few
days

Please let me know if you feel like you are more susceptible to whatever
bugs may be waiting for a crack in your immune defenses after eating gluten.
I'm not interested in hearing about the usual symptoms (bloating, cramps,
nausea, headache, etc.); those are real symptoms that I know about. I would
like to know if you catch a bug of some kind as one of your symptoms.
Thanks-

Mary in upstate NY

P.S. Before going gf, I hardly ever got sick! How about you? I was younger
then :-)
