Thanks to all of you who responded to my questions below. I’m posting this summary of the posts:I've received over the past few days.
Questions for listserv:
(1)take probiotics?(2) problems with highliver enzymes since being diagnosed with celiac?

Again, thanks, [log in to unmask]

 SUMMARY:
1.) I have had a blood test done with high liver enzymes. I was told that they
would be elevated if I had any alcohol or Tylenol three days prior to the testing. I had gone to dinner the night
before and had wine and I have not been retested
2.) Yes., I do take probiotics - Flora Source which I get off the web - Dr.
Mercola recommended this brand. What I like is they don't need
refrigeration, so I am less likely to forget to take them. I take one a day
on an empty stomach.
3.) My son takes Align. It is GF and it appears to be helpful. 4. You will need to check on the probiotics to make sure they are gluten free.
I used to take Culterelle, which is available at Wal-Mart, Walgreens Pharmacy, and Publix Grocery in my
area. I recently switched to Flora Q2 which is a whole lot more expensive and harder to find, but
I wanted a probiotic that was dairy free. Kroger's Pharmacy ordered it for me, but I will order it on-line
next time to get a better price. I have high liver enzymes right now, too, which may be caused by a
rheumatoid arthritis shot I am currently taking. The doctor's PA called me and I will go back for
additional labs on Tuesday. About six years ago, the same thing happened when the rheumatologist
tried to put me on Methotrexate. At that time, she also found hepatitis antibioties. I was either exposed
to hepatitis or had it and didn't know it. There is an autoimmune hepatitis associated with celiac disease.

5.) BecauseI'm on medicine for rheumatoid arthritis I have blood drawn every couple of
weeks. I have had elevated liver enzymes - up to 2 or 3 time normal a couple of times. But it has been going back to normal. My rheumatologist
has not been worried about since it returns to normal. We did decrease my methotrexate for awhile. I have gained a
lot of weight because of the steroids so I think my drs. think it's fatty liver. I also
take probiotics. I think many are GF but I'm sure there are some that aren't so always check.

6.) I take probiotics and they work incredible. I take kyo-dophilus brand. I had high liver enzymes before I went GF
and now it's okay. Take care

7.)I was put through a detox by my NP. My liver was so messed up that I tested
positive for Hep B, but do not have it! I use both the probiotics that
need to keep cool and ones that don't and the ones I get are gf. I cannot
see why they would have gluten in them, but always read your labels just in case;.

8. my GI doc put me onto VSL#3 (www.vsl3.com) yes, had very high liver enzymes for a while. started following
Dr Fuhrman's eating plan from his book "Eat to Live" www.drfuhrman.com and liver enzymes are now normal

9. Might be totally different but I had elevated liver enzymes for years before being diagnosed with celiac
(no GI symptoms). After being on GF diet for only 2 months, my liver enzymes normalized. (still have
high celiac panel #s but the liver #s are good after years of slight elevation)

10. I'm taking FloraQ2. It is gluten free.
 11. Iam on probiotics; mine are GF. You would have to do a check on the one
you want to take. And yes, I had very high liver enzymes before being diagnosed. this is how I was finally diagnosed after 14
years. The Dr. thought I had liver cancer and wanted exploratory surgery-fortunate for me, it was Celiac Sprue disease.
12. An M. D. writes: Celiac disease is a cause of elevated liver enzymes. You will need to
follow them with blood tests over time. The frequency to follow at depends on how high they are.
If celiac related they will normalize
13. I take L-Glutamine and Acidophilus twice per day and eat a yogurt with live active cultures
for lunch each day. I get Pro Performance brand L-Gutamine and Natural Brand Acidophilus,
both from GNC and the label says gluten free.\
 14. I had high liver enzymes 5 - 6 yrs ago. Test after test for contributing factors and many
scans later with no results except for a couple of small hemangiomas in my liver - - - which endocrinologist
didn't think caused the elevation. Then I read in an herbal health magazine about 'milk thistle' herb helping
liver problems and took it for maybe 6 months. Next time I had bloodwork done, my liver enzymes were normal.
That's my 'story'. Hope you find an answer.
15. My daughter's liver enzymes fluctuate normal and out of normal range while she is on the GF diet.
I am also trying to figure out what this means.. I also have Celiac, but do not have elevated liver enzymes.
16. Yes, I take probiotics, Isotonix brand (GF).My liver enzymes were elevated before I went GF.
17. take Jarrow probiotics, they are gluten free. I like them because a Consumer Reports I read
recommended them as retaining a high amount of live beneficial bacteria, probably because they are
kept cold (I get them at the refrigerated section of nutrients at Whole Foods). I wouldn't advise getting
probiotics that meant to be kept at room temperature. You could ask your pharmacist to order probiotics
that are gluten free and kept cold if you have trouble finding something specific.
18.About the liver enzymes, I can't help you, mine have always been fine (knock on wood). I'd look carefully
over side effects for any pharmaceuticals you are taking. My best friend was in the hospital for weeks with
liver failure over taking something for her spastic colon. The doc had forgotten to do her liver panel and she almost died.
19. Yes,I take them and they are GF. They are made by Natrol ( I bought them at
my local health food store) and they are called: BioBeads, Probiotic
Acidophilus Comples- I paid $20 for 30 beads.

21. High liver enzymes triggered my diagnosis, and yes, they are still high.
22. .I take 1 probiotic with my main meal each day-My is alittle rare since I have a feeding tube due to stomach
cancer so I only snack daily and I take the probiotic with my biggest snack of the day...it
seems to help my main symptom of sprue which is diarrhea. I had elevatedliver enzymes when I was on TPN feeding but since the
tube feeding my enzymes have leveled out to normal. I realize that this case is probably not too
appliable to ours but with celiac so many factors are intermingled. The probiotics do seem to help though.

23. I take probiotic capsules by Jarrow.
24. I had high enzyme count which led eventually to Celiac diagnosis. It has gone down since on GF diet.
