Hello there:

Several people requested a Trix cereal summary. A few preliminaries:

1. A number of people suggested that we try Trix and see if anyone
reacts. For good or ill, none of my three celiac kids ever had any
symptoms so I can't use that as a barometer.

2. I called General Mills yesterday and they told me that if there
are no "banned" ingredients on the list on the side panel, then it is
GF, even though the label does not say "gluten-free." I also told
them we loved Rice Chex and wanted more GF cereals. As most of you
know, General Mills will not label a food GF unless it is
manufactured at a dedicated facility.

3. A few people on the list responded that Trix was NOT GF and
contained barley malt extract or flavoring. This is not true, at
least not according to the box I bought.

Here are a summary of responses:

1. The vast majority of people who responded eat Trix and/or let
their celiac kids eat Trix. I counted only 2 (out of approx. 30)
responses of people who thought Trix contained gluten.

2. On the Feb/March 2007 Clan Thompson Mini List, Trix is listed as
following: Trix Cereal (check the label because old boxes are still
on the
shelves. If you don't see wheat in the ingredients, you have one of
the new GF boxes.)

3. Any gluten in Trix would most likely be from cross contamination
so it's a judgment call.

4. Many suggested the Enviro-Kids line of cereals or Perky-Os.
We've tried them--mixed reviews from the kids. Thanks to all the
parents out there who let me know that Fruity Pebbles, Dora the
Explorer, and Honey Kix are GF. We'll try those, too.
