Last week I called EnteroLab because I was concerned when I heard about the German study that invalidated stool tests for CD in children. I had just spent $1500 to test my 3 kids. Thank you to everyone who responded to me, both in favor of and opposed to Dr. Fine's research conclusions. I spoke with Phyllis. I asked:

Is Dr. Fine's test different from the German test? Her answer was that Dr. Fine's test is patented, so he's the only one testing the way he does. His test is a completely different test from the ones in the German study. It's a different test and a different procedure.

While I had her on the phone I was curious about a couple of things. Since I'm gene testing my kids I wondered if they need the double gene to get CD. She said "no" and 1% of the population has the disease without the genes, so there's a gene combination that they don't know about yet.

Here's info supplied by listmates:

1. One person said the IgM antibody test diagnosed her.

2. Another said: ...there's a new "instant" CD and gluten intolerance test which has been
developed/used in Europe. The Medscape article on it is:
http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/513809 and it seems to correlate highly
with the conventional celiac panel. It uses a drop or two of blood and not
fecal material. Patients have to be actively consuming gluten at the time
of the test.

York Labs http://www.yorkallergyusa.com/ is the only US seller of it. ... No doctor prescription is required - and it's relatively cheap.
The kits are sold under the name cdSCAN IgA Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG)
Autoantibody Assay .

3. read Dr. Fine's complete patent http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PG01&s1=enterolab&OS=enterolab&RS=enterolab.
Dr. Fine is giving a seminar in Dallas in March http://www.intestinalhealth.org/

4. flowchart on diagnosing celiac at http://www.aafp.org/afp/20021215/2259.html

Thanks again to all. My mind is at ease (for now).

Regards,
Marian
