Does anyone know about the science behind celiac and vitamin/mineral
supplementation versus absorption?
Specifically, although my doctors have been cooperating minimally with
the idea of testing for blood levels of vitamins and minerals (B12,
magnesium, iron, etc.), several keep saying that well, when you have
celiac, you can take all the vitamins and minerals you want but they
still won't get absorbed. And so when you start absorbing, there won't
be a need for supplements.
Leaving out the idea that some people never fully heal, I thought that
there was still a reason for celiacs to take supplements.
Specifically, isn't the idea that yes, we're only absorbing X% of
vitamins and minerals, but X% of say the 1,000 milligrams I eat may
not be enough, but X% of 2,000 milligrams (what I eat plus what I take
in vitamin form) may be enough, or at least more than I would have
otherwise gotten?
And also, the idea that vitamin and mineral deficiencies can do
lasting damage, so I want to cut that off now rather than wait another
year or two until I heal (we hope, but don't know) completely.
What I really need is some kind of scientific or medical basis for
this so I can make a cogent argument for why I want full and complete
support for supplementation.
