I can get it (McCann's brand from Ireland) locally at both the health
food store and the regular grocery here (Publix). It's yummy oatmeal
and is definitely 'pure':) While not a sensitive celiac (unless I eat
boatloads of gluten over the course of weeks), I am highly allergic to
wheat and gluten, breaking out in hives and eczema on touching
wheat/gluten contaminated products. I've been cooking and handling this
oatmeal for months now with no problems..... My three year old is
sensitive in the celiac department and she eats this (and cookies made
from it) with no problems.

I think you can buy McCann's oatmeal (from Ireland) in just about
any regular grocery store in the U.S. Why pay extra shipping if you
don't need to? Enjoy your breakfast!

Last Sept. Dr. Catassi from Dr. Faisano's lab spoke to our group.
Apparently the only countries with uncontaminted oats are Finland and
Sweden. Good luck.

I remember a discussion in European web-forums about the status of
oat-flakes. There was a scientifically controlled study on oat products. As
far as I remember: hand-sorted oat flakes turned out to be safe. However,
almost no product was clean oat and had to be sorted out - except one
charge, I think it was from the German Brueggen(not sure 100 %). Peaple
recommended to put flakes in water, soak it for a while and look carefully
at each grain - you can tell if it is oat or wheat by the opaqueness of it.
At least 20 grains of wheat were found in each handfull of "pure" oat. You
can imagine what happens if they grind it! (oat is by far more expensive
than any other grain!)

The Finnish study is somewhere in the St. Johns celiac archive.
I wouldnt trust any brand. Look for a farmer who grows oat biologically -
and only oat (the containers could be contaminated etc.) and grind it in a
mill by yourself (the mills are a good investment anyway for a from the
shelf kitchen).

Sorry for this disappointing answer.

Much luck

I, too, miss my oatmeal. The cereal, and the cookies-ahh. I have been reading
the thread and was ready to run out and buy some.

Before I did, just yesterday, I went to the McCann's Irish Oatmeal site. They
state in their FAQ that they can't guarantee that their oatmeal is GF due to
possible contamination in milling and they gave the tiny percentage if gluten
that may exist. I was almost convinced to buy it, but I emailed them one
question. I asked if the oats were grown in rotation in fields with wheat.
From what I've read over the years, this is problematic. The response I got
last night was that it is. I've decided not to chance it. You will have to
make your own decision.

McCann's Irish Oatmeal (steel cut) is available in most supermarket chains
such as Stop & Shop, Whole Foods, Bread & Circus.

I've not reacted to it, but have had reactions to other brands of oatmeal.

I like mine with dried canberries and walnuts!

I am a celiac living in the Netherlands and Sweden. Oatmeal here is
absolutely not GF!!! The Swedish celiac society estimates the pollution
with wheat etc. being up to 5%. In Holland no manufacturer garantees
their oatmeal being GF.

Yes, oatmeal grown and manufactured in England is SAFE!!!! I get it
from The British Food Store in San Jose, CA.

It is called Mornflakes Oatmeal. I eat it several times a week without
any reaction. I first came upon it while living in Hiafa, Israel. They
stocked their store with this oatmeal and I knowing that English oats
were safe I brought back loads of it back to the USA.

The British Food Store is @ 408-374-7770 or 888-747-5522 toll free.
The oats cost $2.95 a box and it comes in a case of 12. They ship UPS
and that cost $9.53.

It is well worth it! I use the oats in cookies, meatloaf, hot hotmeal
cereal, etc! EXCITING!!!!!!!!!

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask!

Happy ordering, P.S. You can tell them I told you about the oats they
remember me!
