Thank you to everyone who responded with helpful information of places to eat a GF lunch/snack in and around Washington DC.
Many of you wrote with helpful advice and comments re/where to eat a light meal at affordable cost. My family had been told in advance, absolutely no food/beverages could be brought into many of the buildings they would be visiting. Since they were traveling
via public transportation each day the food restrictions made it more difficult.

They had a wonderful time and found places each day for the 2 celiacs to enjoy lunch. They were in the Washington area for a week....neither of the celiacs became ill and everyone had an enjoyable visit.
Thank you all again.
Some of the responses follow:

There is an amazing selection of reasonably priced gluten free choices
at the Museum of the American Indian on the Smithsonian Mall. I have
never seen so many entre's, salads, and desserts -- it's cafeteria-style
and choices are clearly labeled gluten-free. The two choices I had
tasted great. No admission charge to the museum.

PF Changs-Gluten Free Menu (Arlington)
Teds Montana Grill-Gluten Free Menu (Arlington, Alexandria)
Z pizza-Gluten Free Crust, and tons of gluten free toppings (DC, Arlington, Alexandria)
Baja Fresh-Bare Burrito is fantastic! (and the chips are corn)
Austin Grill-Gluten Free menu and gluten free chips and salsa (in DC and Alexandria)
CakeLove-Gluten Free cupcakes in stock all the time
Potbelly-Uptown Salad w/out blue cheese (they have a full allergen list on website)
Trader Joes keeps gluten free English muffins and "French rolls" (I use them as hamburger buns) in stock at all area locations. They get a new shipment every morning.
FroYo-in DC
Sweetgreen (I haven't been there yet, but I hear they have a gluten free menu)

DC is great for GF dining! Almost every restaurant i have been to is familiar with GF and will help me figure out what to eat... Here are the big areas around DC with different GF options:

If they are going to be downtown or sightseeing by the mall:
The Native American Indian Museum Cafe has TONS of GF options and is right on the national mall. It is a little pricey but the food is safe and amazing!

If they are here during the week there is a cafe called Java Green on K and 18th NW (google for exact address) that has lots of sandwhichs that are GF- including GF deserts. This is only open during the weekdays though for lunch- no weekends.

Chinatown/Gallery place there is Legal Seafood which has a great and amazing GF menue on F and 7th streets NW. It is a little pricey but amazing food and not outrageous for lunch. Red Velvet Cupcakery on same street about 1 block down has GF cupcakes

In Georgetown Uno's has a GF menu and GF piazza. They are average prices.

In dupont Circle Hello Cupcake also has GF cupcakes

In Columbia Heights sticky Fingers Bakery off of Irving and 14th has great GF baked goods, and some lunch options. There is also The Heights on 14th and Iriving that is familiar with GF and is willing to help out. They are reasonably priced and great food.

Cleveland Park Shangi Garden on Connecticut Ave NW can make any and all chinese Dishes Gluten Free. Reasonable, even a little cheap and yummy!

Potbellys (sandwhich/salad place) is also carefull about GF in salads and they are everywhere in the city.

Chipoltle is another option. Just request them to use new gloves when making your food, but they are also all over the city.

Finally, http://www.urbanspoon.com/c/7/Washington-DC-restaurants.html has a link that has all the restraunts in the area with GF menues you can even search by food type...

Susan Flinn, area celiac support chairman provided this link to favorite area restaurants with GF options from their website.
The list is quite extensive and Susan was most accomodating and kind.
