Thank you for all who responded. I received a little information on USD,
some information about San Diego and also some information on UCSD. I will
pass along all of this information. Thank you again.

USD

1) My daughter was a freshman last year at USD and is returning in the
fall. She is not our celiac in the family. She is a vegetarian however and
faced some similar challenges.
I have checked out the USD dining website mostly because I have a feeling
that my younger celiac daughter will be joining her sister at USD in two
years.

Here is a link to the dining page where they describe how the food is
labeled at the dining facilities:

http://www.sandiego.edu/dining/wellness.php

I do not believe that there is a completely separate area for gluten free
foods though.

The new Student Life Pavilion building is opening at the beginning of the
school year too.
If your friend does a little research on the website, there is a list of the
restaurants going in there. I think I remember Vietnamese, Vegetarian/Vegan
and a bunch of others that should have GF selections.

Also a related situation...when my celiac daughter attended a camp at
Sacramento State College last summer, I just contacted the food service
director myself. She was VERY knowledgeable about GF foods and went way out
of her way to accommodate my daughter. She told me that she has many GF
kids during the school year. So, I would say contact the dining services
director at USD directly to discuss it with her. Carol Norman x8880 or
(619) 260-8880.

2) I have a niece who attends USD. You will be happy to know that they
have an entire GF cafeteria.

Here is the information I received from my niece. It includes a link for
more information. Hope this helps.

"there are gluten free items spread throughout the various dining areas
here's a link to the USD website that talks a little about it, I know that
La Paloma definitely has gluten free tortillas that it uses to make wraps

San Diego

1) Hi, although I don't know specifically about UCSD, there is a big
gluten-free contingency and awareness in San Diego itself. Google it and
you will find the group that is big in SD; sorry I couldn't be more
specific. I think your son will do fine, though.

2) I don't know UCSD specifically, but he'll find lots of information about
being GF in San Diego at www.glutenfreeinsd.com. Congratulations to your
son.

3) Here is the web site for the local support group. I believe that
they are having an event in Escondido on the 11th too, so if he would be
there this month: http://glutenfreeinsd.com/index.html

4) The sprouts Market in San Diego offered to stock WFGF chicken Fingers
and Corn Dogs if that will help. Not a balanced diet but good for the dorm
room.

UCSD

1) UCSD has a Celiac Center as part of their medical facility. They
have a dietician on their staff so I would hope they are prepared to treat a
Celiac student with some kind of understanding.

College Students

1) While I have no information specifically about San Diego the
Rochester Celiac Support Group website (www.rochesterceliacs.org
<http://www.rochesterceliacs.org/> , GF at School) has relevant information
about other schools and arrangements made to meet the needs of students on
the gluten free diet.
