Hello friends -
Sorry this took so long. Basically, mot people told me that it's important to check everything, from the powder on the gloves used by both the dentist and the hygienist, all the way through to the mouthwash, sometimes used for rinsing. This includes the floss, the polishing compound, and the filling material, if necessary.
I was advised by one person that to the best of their knowledge, flavored dental floss, injectible pain killers, tooth-filling compounds (both composite and metallic) and x-ray film holds have not been reported as gluten sources. This same person stated that Nupro brand polishing compound is very popular, and was reported 6 months ago, to be GF in all flavors. I called Johnson and Johnson, and was assured that all of their Reach brand dental flosses are gluten free.
Many also advised me to have my dentist mark my personal file with a medical alert, noting that only gluten free gloves and other supplies must be used.
I hope this is helpful. I will check with my dentist before my visit, and if necessary, will take my own toothpaste and floss, and will rinse with only water.
Milt
