Here is my attempt at summarizing all of the great replies (13 so far) I
got regarding info about GF products (ex. supplements/medications) that can
help restore bone loss:

1. 3 people said that they have been taking Fosimax ,a prescription
medication which is reported to increase bone density. Of these 3, 2 said
they were previously taking calcitonin (prescription also, nasal spray
form), and 1 of those 2 said the switch to Fosimax occured after taking
calcitonin for 18 months with no improvement. Another person is now taking
calcitonin (brand name Miacalcin) and stated that it is supposed to be
absorbed at a higher rate than other products, but is expensive.

2. A number of people mentioned a source of GF supplements called Freeda
Vitamins. There phone # is (800)777-3737. If you tell them you have CD
you get a 20% discount. One person reported taking Quin-Tabs M (high
potency) one in the morning and one at night. Another person is taking 4-6
Freeda chewable chelated Calcium/Magnesium plus Ultra-Freeda multivitamins
and an extra 22.5 mg of chelated zinc. Another mentioned several products
that Freeda offers - Fem Cal, Parvacal 500, Super Cal/Mag, Silica,
Cal-Mint, Calcium Citrate; in addition, Freeda also has an informative
paper called "Nutrients to Increase Bone Density."

3.  Other supplements that were recommended were Tums (twice a day);
Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite Calcium and Boron; Nature's Life
Cal/Mag/Zinc formula that also has Vit D and other minerals; Solgar Calcium
w/ Vit D (2 pills twice a day with meals provide 1000 mg calcium); Citrical
D (6 to 8 per day); cod liver oil (high in omega-3 fatty acids; supposed to
help w/ absorption of calcium; also mentioned possibility of taking
primrose oil) and TwinBrooks TriBoron; and Nature Made Calcium Citrate and
cod liver oil softgels for Vit D.

4. Eating more soy was mentioned by one person who recommended 2 articles
about soy increasing bone density (Family Circle Magazine, Feb.18th issue
and the January 1997 issue of Prevention Magazine pg. 58.) An article in
the March 97 issue of Prevention on calcium for stronger bones was also
recommended. Also mentioned were the following mail order sources for
catalog ordering of soy in Family Circle: Harvest Direct 1 800-835-2867.
Nutritious Foods 1 800-445-3350 and the mail order catalog Co. which sells
soy protein powder 1 800-695-2241. This person also is eating soy burgers
(product name is Boca Burgers).

5. A few people stressed the importance of exercise (especially
weight-bearing).

6. One person mentioned drinking skim milk (3 glasses/day) along with one
calcium-fortified OJ each day

Many thanks to everyone who responded and thanks to all who make this list
possible. Take care.

Mark
