I also went to a conference in NY in June and Dr Peter Green said that individuals with Celiac Disease should not take Fosamax or similar drugs during the first year after diagnosis. The reason for this is that until the small bowel has healed, there is a danger that the medication will take more calcium out of the blood and cause low serum calcium levels. This can be dangerous to heart function. Once the GI tract is working well again and the individual can absorb oral calcium better, then it will be safe to take Fosamax. I hope this clears up some of the confusion. It is also true that some individuals cannot tolerate the GI side effects of Fosamax.
