We had our daughter tested because she was having difficulties in school
according to her teacher. The psychologist said that she is very bright,
learns best by hearing, and has a slight auditory filtering problem, as well
as very mild ADD ("borderline case"). He then said he wanted to put her on
Ritalin. He knows all about celiac and has several patients who are celiac
and sees the connection between diet and behavior especially in children.

My question is, wouldn't it make sense to adjust the teacher's teaching
style to fit our daughter's learning style (this is possible because she
goes to a private school with a very small class) instead of automatically
putting her on Ritalin for a "borderline" case of ADD? Has anyone else had
experience with celiac kids, ADD, Ritalin (is it GF?) and concentration
problems? I know it affects behavior because when our daughter went GF, the
teacher noticed her behavior changing for the better and asked us if we put
her on Ritalin. We explained that it was all due to the dietary changes and
she was amazed. She is also mildly dairy, egg, and food coloring intolerant
and we do let her have these items in moderation. We would like to try an
experiment and take her off these items completely and see if her
concentration improves. Thanks in advance for any insight and for sharing
your experiences on a very personal matter.

Warmly,

Bev Wahl
