Fellow List Members,
Let me begin with a hearty thank you to ALL of those who responded to my
vinegar question. This list continues to amaze.

As you may recall, I was confused about vinegars in general. Malt vs
cider vs white, etc. There has been a more recent question re the GF
status uf distilled (white) vinegars. I will try to address that below
with the information I have received.

First and foremost, and I probably needn't say this, always read the
ingredients list. The information below cannot account for any
particular flavouring or colouring additives that manufacturers may
include in an otherwise harmless product.

CIDER VINEGARS comes from apples and is fine. Probably GF.

MALT VINEGARS comes from malt as is a definite no no. Not GF.

FLAVOURED VINEGARS (e.g. RED WINE, RASPBERRY, ETC.) are typically
self-explanatory (Waynel's words) but check the ingrediets. Probably GF.

BALSAMIC VINEGARS are generally GF but be careful. The cheaper
balsamic's are "cut with white vinegar" (from Ann). Bobbi reported that
Italian products are typically very safe as they are very strict about
adultered products.

CHEAPER VINEGARS are typically not GF. These vinegars are often
distilled from wheat and then flavoured. They may be flavoured to cider,
balsamic, etc.

And finally ...
WHITE VINEGAR or just plain VINEGAR is probably not GF.

DISTILLED VINEGARS can be distilled from wheat or corn or potatoes or
wood. Susan reports that US authorities do not allow vinegars distilled
from wheat. Hence, in the US distilled vinegars would be distilled from
corn, potatoes or wood, and would thus probably be fine. In Canada
vinegars can be distilled from wheat. Susan did not mention the other
nations of this fine planet.

DISTILLED VINEGARS distilled from CORN and/or POTATOES are probably
GF. However, some respondents
complained of problems with these, as if somehow trace amounts of
gluten made their way into the bottle.
Susan and Bev recommended Heiz white vinegar as it is distilled from
corn.

DISTILLED VINEGARS distilled from WHEAT are a no no. Definitely not
GF.

DISTILLED VINEGARS distilled from WOOD are probably GF. Anne
reported that these wood based vinegars
are often the vinegar used in processed foods.

Thank you again to all who responded.
