I guess I agree the recent post. I would caution against any approach to
the FDA that does not involve the efforts a professional government
relations specialist. An uncoordinated campaign may do nothing but
raise the antennae of the food industry and cause them to lauch a
preemptive campaign resulting in legislation or regulations that are easy
for them to comply with, but not overly helpful to the food allergic
population. We must remember that no argument has one side and the
food industry probably has a number of legitimate concerns in this
regard, including product liability. I would encourage the leadership of
the celiac organizations to consider formulating a logical and STRATEGIC
approach to this issue, remembering that any result will involve some
compromise. Perhaps they should begin by meeting with organizations
like the American Heart Association to find out how they got
manufacturers to voluntarily do the little "heart healthy" thing. Voluntary
is always better than legislated. They should also talk to consumer
groups who were involved in the whole fda nutrition label thing. I fear
very much that celiacs will naively jump into a letter writing campaign and
will get their legs cut out from under them.
