I have just come from a visit with my GI doc, and I'm extremely
frustrated. I would appreciate any input the listers can give me. I have
a long list of symptoms which can all be explained away with a celiac
diagnosis. My blood work all came back negative. I have been on a GF
diet the three weeks since the blood work was done, with one major
diarrhea event after a bowl of soup that I wasn't totally sure was GF (a
gift from a neighbor). The GI doc says the only definitive diagnosis is
a biopsy, which I am choosing to put off until April since I just
recently finished treatment for breast cancer and I'm really tired of
anesthetics and procedures! In the meantime the doc is saying "irritable
bowel, this happens when you eat out because you eat foods you don't
usually and your small intestine isn't making the right enzymes to
digest it, take Imodium before you go out, etc." I don't know what to
do. The GF diet, as you are all very aware, is not an easy one to be on,
especially with traveling and the holidays. On the other hand, I don't
always have a reaction when I eat something that obviously has gluten in
it, so maybe this isn't celiac. I guess I'm just fed up with not
knowing. I read about people who feel they are definitely celiac without
ever having a positive blood test or biopsy. I'd love to hear your
opinions. Should I always react to a gluten exposure? Is there any harm
in munching my way through the next few months until the biopsy and just
taking Imodium when I'm going to be away from the bathroom? Where else
can you ask these gut questions without blushing!!?? Thanks for your
input.
Frustrated Leslie, eating Subway sandwich like a bad child! ;>(
