Many listers responded that my symptoms are classic issues with Celiac
Disease and they are due to malabsorbtion and often will go away after
some time on the gluten-free diet, however it depends on how much organ
damage was done prior to diagnosis. In some cases, the damage is
permanent and requires treatment.

Gallbladder: 7 had theirs removed; 2 indicated they had learned that the
area of the intestine that is damaged by CD is where the substance is
produced that makes your gallbladder work. The nerve damage in the
stomach inhibits the gallbladder from emptying properly and can also cause
the bile to get thick and form stones.

Liver Enzymes: 10 had elevated liver enzymes – some of those for many
years, but they resolved after some time on a gluten-free diet

2 said they now have autoimmune hepatitis – 1 believes this is because CD
causes a predisposition to other autoimmune diseases (she was on the diet
for 23 years and only started having problems 5 years ago), 1 was
diagnosed with the AIH prior to being diagnosed with CD

antibody tests such as anti-nuclear antibody and smooth muscle antibody
can be done to show if you have antibodies swirling around in your body
attacking your body and tissue and organs

1 person sent links to two articles discussing an association between
Primary Biliary Cirrhosis and CD

Pancreas/Blood Sugar Issues: 3 said they have pre-diabetic hypoglycemia
symptoms like shakiness, coldness, weakness, dizziness, and migraines
(although all do not have all those symptoms).

Suggestions to help control these symptoms were:
1. to mix some carbs with fat ad protein at each meal since for some, too
many carbs alone cause too much insulin to be released and the blood sugar
drops suddenly and you get symptoms
2. check out what Atkins has to say on how carbs are processed by
insulin, insulin resistance, lower production of insulin by the pancreas,
hypoglycemia, and diabetes; his 1981 book “Nutritional Breakthrough, How
to Treat Medical Conditions without Drugs” was recommended

4 have taken some type of pancreatic enzymes or supplements to help their
digestive problems and 1 had trouble with the enzymes
1. check out website www.houstonni.com and see what Dr. Houston has to
offer
2. one had stool test done and sent to the Great Smokey Labs and found
she had suffered a level of permanent damage so takes pancreatic enzymes
and lypo based on her results
3. one became ill on enzymes and found that the pharmacy could not
guarantee the enzymes were gf because they could not guarantee the cows
did not eat wheat or gluten; she recovered after 1 month off enzymes
4. one uses Thorne Bio-Gest Supplement that contains stomach acid
replacement, pepsin, amylase, lipase and ox bile

3 wrote who have Diabetes – 1 controls it with diet, 1 has been a Type 1
diabetic for 30 years and was only recently diagnosed with Celiac. She
said she can see if someone had untreated CD and was not absorbing food
then got Type 1 diabetes that if could mask the diabetes and when go GF
and malabsorbtion resolves, then blood sugar could go up. She is dealing
with fluctuations in insulin needs while dealing with Celiac and being GF

Additional Info

1. 3 believe a parent death was from undetected Celiac; 1 died from
Primary Liver Cancer, 1 from cancer of the liver and pancreas, and 1 died
from Primary Biliary Cirrhosis
2. make your own kefir
3. research taurine
4. try goat yogurt

I’m afraid this summary has gotten rather long, so I’ll end it here. I
also received a number of websites to check out. If anyone would like a
complete list of those, please e-mail me and I’ll get you the info.
Thanks!!
