Hello List,

I am looking for some experienced gluten-free hikers/campers who can share the name brand and meal type/name of those freeze dried meal kits (the ones you just add water to) when you are hiking/camping. Our family does lots of camping, but we have somewhat gotten away from the camping/hiking where we would take along these meal kit things. We're not ready for Mt. Everest or anything... but are looking to get a bit away from the "YogiBear style" camping we've been doing since going gluten-free (and since having two kids).

We were in a hiking store yesterday and I read every package of these meals that they carried at this location and every one of them had some form of gluten except for one.... the egg meal. Most of them listed wheat starch and a few of the others had barley added. Then there were the few that listed modified food starch, and I was not familiar with the particular company who makes these, so those would a be a "no go" until further clarification. So, gluten-free hikers/campers, I would love to hear from you. Before the gluten-free diet and two kids, we were the kind of hikers/campers who would hike in 5-10 miles with minimal stuff (but with some of those freeze dried meal things, water purifiers, some water, tent, etc.) and somewhat "rough it."

I would also appreciate your comments as to whether the meal/kit you purchased tasted good or bad (in your opinion). We have recently purchased a few "cup-a-soup" type things that are GF and may work for camping, but I don't know how filling they would be.

I do have a fairly good list of GF protein/cereal/granola/energy type bars, so I really don't need any suggestions on those.

Thanks in advance for your reponses and I will definitely summarize.
