Rosalie was asking about companion diseases w/ Sprue & I did not get a
chance to respond. Diabetes is a companion disease w/ Sprue-- both Type
1- insulin dependent & what is called Type 2 (non-insulin dependent).
There are several listmates w/ both.

Either way, the same thing happens to the cardiovascular system...... it
is 4X higher risk for heart disease & diabetic complications which
include kidney failure, blindness, amputations, neuropathy, strokes &
heart attacks.

Diabetics must watch carbohydrate intake, of which gluten free grains
are VERY high in carb content (before you even add any sugar, butter,
etc..). The body turns all carbohydrates into sugar in the system. The
combination of switching to the gluten free grains in the diet & healing
gut (now absorbing),  often results in  people w/ Sprue gaining lots of
weight & too high cholesterol (bloop lipid) levels.
These results can *open the door* to diabetes.

One can mitigate or postpone these effects by keeping an eye on your
weight, eat smaller amounts of GF grains, and make sure regular exercise
is a part of your plan to be healthy.
