Ortega taco seasoning mix is NOT gluten free. I called the manufacter last
fall and the lady I spoke with said it was never gluten-free...I had seen
dates as late as 1999 in one of the shopping guides that had verfied it's
g.f. status which indicated that to be untrue. I know it was gluten-free for
many years when it was actually owned by Ortega. My husband research the
acquisitions and Nabisco took over the brand ~1995, so the change occured
after that.

When I questioned which ingredients contained gluten, the rep was
unable/unwilling to give me a definitive answer. I was a bit skeptical that
the information I had been given was correct, until I saw packages of Ortega
(frozen/prepared/heat & serve) Taco Meat shortly after that. Because it
contains meat, it is subject to a different set of labeling rules by the
USDA...On that package, FLAVOR was listed as "flavor (hydrolyzed wheat
gluten)" I'm assuming that they use Ortega taco seasoning in that product
and that's where the problem is. Unfortunately, FDA rules don't require that
gluten to be labeled.

Nabisco was recently bought by Kraft and www.nabisco.com is now a direct link
to Kraft.
