Thank you for the many responses to my question of whether a celiac is draft
deferred. There was a general agreement that celiacs will not be deployed
even if they are in the military. Several people indicated that they were in
the military when they were diagnosed and that they were told they would not
deploy or would be kept stateside. One person who wished to join the
military was denied when it was learned he was a celiac. Most responders
pointed out that there is no draft at the current time but they believed that
a celiac would not be drafted if it were reinstated in the future. I heard
from people who were enlisted in the army and the coast guard and they
pointed out that the military cannot provide the correct diet for a celiac at
this time. Hope this holds true in the future!
