Below are summaries of the responses I received for GF restaurants and
health food stores in the Red Bank, NJ area (Bethlehem, PA and Phillipsburg, NJ,
for which I also requested info, are summarized in another e-mail):

You are in luck! Not only did a new Whole Foods open this week on Route 35
in Middletown (halfway between Red bank and Holdmel), you are close to
Wegmans which has a huge amount of gf foods.

As for restaurants, there is a Carraba's Grill in Middletown that has a
gluten free menu, and an Outback in Old Bridge, NJ (not too far)

Down to Earth is a very good vegan restaurant where they understand food
sensitivities and 'gluen-free'. But you have to specify gluten from wheat, rye,
barley, and oats - or else they'll tell you about rice gluten, etc., as well
as the gluten we have problems with.

Outback Restaurant in Middletown has a knowledgeable staff and I always felt
safe eating there. Of course, Outback has a gf menu that you can get online
or at the
restaurant. It's advisable to call ahead for a table; they are usually
pretty busy.

Steven's Nutrition Center is about 15 minutes out of Red Bank, but it had
the best selection of GF foods in the area when I lived there (1 year ago).

Dean's health food store is a very nice market with a good selection of GF
foods as well as wonderful organic produce, etc. It's about 5 minutes out of
Red Bank.

From Amy:

I live in the general vicinity of Holmdel ...two towns away from Holmdel is
a town called Matawan ... There is a health food store in Matawan on Rte. 34
called "Good Nature Health Foods." ... They have a good assortment of snacks,
and frozen dinners...

Next to Holmdel is Middletown and on Rte 35 there is a Carrabbas Italian Bar
and Grille. They have a gf menu.

From Joyce:

There is a great Italian restaurant in Ocean, NJ that is very familiar with
gf cooking. When I asked about gf food prep, I was pleasantly surprised to
find out that the staff and the chef there understand the dietary needs of
those with celiac disease, aware of the need to cook gf meals separately and they
actually stock gf pasta! Now that's progress! They do not have a separate
gf menu but all you need to do is let them know and they take care of the
rest. They were very accommodating and the food was delicious.

I have no financial interest in this restaurant but I think what they are
doing is wonderful and celiacs should try to go to restaurants who cater to our
dietary needs.

For anyone planning to visit the Jersey Shore this summer, the restaurant is
a few miles away if you take exit 105 on the Garden State Parkway. It's
also only about 5 miles from Monmouth Park Race track.

Thank you to all... great responses! I appreciate that you took the time.
