The American Dietetic Association Food and Nutrition Conference and
Exhibits (FNCE) meeting was highly successful for gluten intolerance
awareness. In 5 days gluten intolerance was represented in the following
ways:

1. 5000 bookmarks were distributed by ‘Dietitians in Gluten Intolerance
Diseases’ (DIGID) members and GF exhibitors advertising a lecture
(Endocrine Disorders Associated with Gluten Intolerance) and listing
nearly 50 gluten free companies.

2. over 200 fliers were distributed encouraging dietitians to join the
DIGID subunit

3. Representation at the Dietitians in General Clinical Practice Board
of Director’s meeting and membership breakfast meeting.

4. A meeting of dietitians from the DIGID group. This is a dynamic group
of dietitians is determined to educate dietitians and take their
rightful place as the experts in medical nutrition therapy for gluten
intolerance disease

5. Shelley Case’s Booth (Author - Gluten Free Diet: A Comprehensive
Resource Guide) in the Product Market Place was the ‘hot place to be’ on
Sunday. There was a steady flow of dietitians seeking Shelley’s book,
and information from Gluten Free Living Magazine, Gluten Intolerance
Group and Celiac Disease Foundation.

6. Over 10 gluten free exhibitors, most located in one area of the
exhibit hall had people asking? What is going on in gluten intolerance?

7. A Press conference was held with Enjoy Life Foods, Shelley Case and
Cynthia Kupper, Exec Director of Gluten Intolerance Group. Already
requests for interviews and articles are coming in from the press.

8. Finally, the lecture sponsored by the Dietitians in General Clinical
Practice - "Endocrine Disorders Associated with Gluten Intolerance" was
a huge success! Mary Kay Sharrett, RD (Children’s Hospital - Gluten Free
Gang) facilitated the lectures and Q&A sessions by Dr. Ed Hoffenberg and
Cynthia Kupper. The Lecture was given to a standing room only crowd.
People were being turned away because the room was so full.

Dietitians definitely knew that gluten intolerance was something to be
aware of. Thanks to all the dietitians in DIGID - dietitians are
learning about celiac disease and being provided with scientifically
sound information on the gluten free diet.

There are a few bookmarks available from GIG. They are a great resource
for dietitians to give their patients.
