A few weeks ago I sent out an email about decontaminating a toaster which
has been used for regular, gluten bread.
I received 19 replies.
The majority suggested that I buy a new toaster and donate the old one to a
thrift shop instead of risking contamination. Most of these replies were
polite and respectful.
Unfortunately, there were a few that weren't and told me not to be so cheap
-- throw the toaster out and buy one from some two-bit company for $10.
IMO, 1) these kind of replies serve no purpose on the discussion list and 2)
do not promote environmentally sound practices.
A few folks had successfully cleaned their toasters with stiff brushes. One
person suggested cleaning with a brush and burning a couple pieces of gf
bread and remove the carbon bits.
Thanks to all who took the time to send me thoughtful replies.
