A 52 year old female friend here in the UK has been diagnosed with neutropenia (low white blood cell count) off and on for 2 years.

A visit to see a hematologist in 2005 found no obvious cause and blood disorders like leukemia were ruled out at that stage (although no major investigations were done). Apparently her neutrophyl count has fluctuated but at times has been "very low". She has also been treated for TATT (tired all the time), stress, depression, migraines (& menopause) over a long period and more recently IBS. Recently she was found to have anemia (depleted iron stores). She has extreme tiredness and is quite distressed by her failure to improve.

Her GP is reluctant to refer her again to a hematologist because "not much can be done in cases of idiopathic neutropenia" and seems more interested in treating her for purely for stress. My own understanding is that stress does not cause repeated neutropenia or anemia and my feeling is that she should certainly ask to be referred to a hematologist again.

However I believe her symptoms also ring bells with the some of the postings on this listserv. She herself is rather reluctant to consider CD or other autoimmune conditions (I believe she had blood tests for CD and SLE in 2005) but is also rather desperate, so if anyone has any relevant experiences, insights or advice I would be very grateful to be able to pass them on.

Charlotte, Oxford, UK

PS I have looked at previous postings on neutropenia.
