Well, after an OVERWHELMING RESPONSE to this question, I must have gotten 50
responses, 95% of responders said gluten would make its way through to the
breastmilk. One response sent two pub-med article abstracts which had
specifically analyzed breastmilk and found gluten proteins in the milk after ingestion.

I actually work in the allergy and asthma field, and we have definitely seen
more research going on to suggest that mother's milk and in utero exposure to
the top allergens does affect the development of food allergies, and that
early pre-birth exposure may be partially to blame for increased prevelance of
food allergies. Since it really boils down to protein exposure, whether its
peanuts or gluten, I am not surprised by the responses being an overwhelming Yes,
she needs to avoid gluten while nursing an infant celiac.

The PubMed articles are as follows:

1. Scand J Gastroenterol 1998 Nov; 33(11): 1186-92. Presence of high levels
of non-degraded gliadin in breastmilk from healthy mothers. PMID: 9867098

2. Acta Paediatr Scand 1987 May; 76(3): 453-6. Passage of gliadin into human
breast milk.

Thanks to each of you who responded. Michelle
