Subject: FDA study on GF Labeling of Food Products Experimental Study --
COMMENT

The FDA published a notice last Friday announcing its intent to conduct a
study of significant interest to those with celiac disease. The notice,
required by the federal government when it wants to collect information for
research purposes, advised that the FDA is "planning to conduct an
experimental study about gluten-free labeling of food products."

After reading the post on the listserv earlier today, some thought the FDA
was soliciting comments on specific questions relating to GF labeling. For
now, we must report, that is not the case. Based on the details in this
notice the FDA will be seeking input from us this summer, so stay tuned.

All of us are incredibly anxious for signs from the FDA that it is moving
forward on requirements for gluten-free labeling. Last August when it missed
the deadline for finalizing the FALCPA rules, the FDA reminded us that a
safety assessment still needed to be completed. With a new Administration
now in
place there is a greater focus on food safety. We hope that it will move
quickly to wrap up these overdue items.
