Ooops! Here's one important response I unintentionally omitted from my
earlier summary. I wanted to include this one because it so vividly
illustrates the internal stuggle and feelings of shame and isolation many of
us have as a result of gluten reactions. Valerie in Tacoma

I am bad..... I cannot say how bad because no one believes me when I tell
them I can't remember where I've been or what I did..... if I eat gluten.
I am like an alcoholic with 'blackouts'.... scary. I am 53.... figured
all this out 12 yrs ago...... the things I must have put my kids through....
the 3 of them have their intolerances..... I have tried to explain exactly
what you have described to Doctors.... only one has ever believed me.... he
had a friend.... and the story goes on. Thank you so much!!! I wish your
family the best, and your son the
world!!! m

[My response:] M, I BELIEVE YOU! I've been there! The reason I'm so
fanatical about following the Gf diet is because the first couple years
after going GF, I couldn't control my behavior when under the influence of
gluten. Now, 5 years into it, when I mess up, I feel profoundly sad & cry a
lot, but at least I don't scream and want to hurt people like I used to.
Those were scarey times. It makes me feel so horribly ashamed after I've
behaved like that.

I believe the reason I have milder gluten reactions now as compared to my
past is that my gut and immune system are healing and my overall health has
improved. Perhaps you will not get so screwed up from an accidendital
gluten ingestion after your health improves????? But, I don't know, you've
been at this for 12 years, so who knows? Valerie

My son still struggles. He called me on his cell phone just two weeks ago
asking me for help as he shopped for food. I think this is what prompted me
to start the schizo-gluten diaglogue again. He had been getting careless &
eating a lot of fast food & found himself acting "wierd" and unable to
"focus" on his school work for the better part of a week.
