BlankThanks again for your replies - I will summarize again if I receive more... I have ordered the book that was recommended...I want to be informed before I have to make decisions, esp. if they involve medication. BTW, I am a rare vomiter - in fact, probably saying 'never' is closer to the truth (my body likes to hold the pain in instead - ugh!). It's the other end that I have trouble w/ and I did realize that when the other end isn't working as it should, I do have acid coming up into my throat. And I cough and clear my throat often. And I have 'breathing' troubles - which we thought might be allergies, but that was proven to not be the case. Hmmm... I was so ready to have the endoscopy, have the gastrologist tell me that this was 'all in my head' and move on - staying GF on my own! Not so!! I truly appreciate your info & help in all of this! I feel quite good again now - am back to exercising again. Hoping & praying that my results come back as 'fixable'. - Dawn

Congrats on not being anemic!!! I am curious the 'number' they gave you,,,when I was first diagnosed they said I should have been atleast an 11,,,,I was 5.1!!! with a 2 unit blood transfusion when that number was found! (over 3 yrs ago)Then over a yr ago I had major surgery and became anemic again,,,and dropped to a 7,,,,of course new family dr etc they were all 'up in arms' and I wasn't. I told them it had been worse. Anyway I was told I should be atleast a 14. I am 14 now,,,just curious. Have you had an upper respitory colds,,,needing steriods/antibiotics and coughing etc,?? I just got done with major surgery in Dec for hiatel hernia repair,,,acid relux repair and embilical hernia repair,,,,so curious. I feel the best I have felt in 8 yrs! The acid can cause erosion which can lead to 'other things',,,,if you care to share,,would be interested in your results. HOping you have a good biopsy of the duodum checking the healing of your villi.

Do a Google search for "acid reflux + celiac disease." You will find it
very common. Chronic acid reflux can cause all sorts of nasty health
complications. The acid blocking drugs that are commonly prescribed, Zantac, Nexium,
Prilosec, Prevacid, TUMS, Rolaids, Maalox, etc. are really the worse thing a
celiac can take for this problem. These drugs upset the natural acid
balance of the entire GI tract setting off a cascade of indigestion,
malabsorption, bacterial & yeast overgrowth, food allergies, leaky gut, etc.
   These drugs cause temporary relief from the symptoms, but destroy health
in the long run. I think doctors who prescribe them long term are
practicing very bad medicine. The good news is, there are healthier, safer and natural ways to get rid of acid reflux. I highly recommend a book written by the world famous healer, Jonathan Wright MD -- WHY STOMACH ACID IS GOOD FOR YOU. He outlines a
program for permently eliminating reflux thus improving overall digestion,
nutrition & health. This book is available at major book sellers. I had terrible reflux, even 8 months after going GF. Eating was a very painful experience. I was so ill I became dangerously thin. My family MD and GI specialist had nothing to offer except those horrible acid blocking drugs. As a last ditch effort to keep me from having to go on tube
feedings, my GI specialist referred me to a naturopath in Seattle who
specializes in dificult GI issues. He put me on Dr. Wright's program. I followed it to the letter & totally recovered.

REFLUX IS DEFINETLY VOMITING WITH A DRESSED UP NAME I STARTED
VOMITING AT A VERY EARLY AGE BEFORE AGE SEVEN, MY KIDS WITH CELIAC DID
A LOT OF VOMITING I CAN'T EAT ANYTHING I LIVE ON TPN
YOU ARE VERY BLESSED IF YOU HAVE NEVER VOMITED

I had acid reflux for awhile before being diagnosed as Celiac (didn't know that's what is was, just knew my system was really upset), dr.prescribed Acifex after being diagnosed Celiac, took it for about a month, rarely take it now. Personally, I think it's just another way of the body showing it doesn't like what we are eating (all that nasty gluten!!) Isn't it wonderful when you start feeling better! Good luck.

How funny? I have been having endoscopies done for seven years now and each time they pose that same question to me. I have not felt like I have had acid reflux this entire time. However, in the past 8 months my voice has become very hoarse and sounds like larengites. I went to the doctor and antibiotics didn't help, I went to an eyes, ears, nose and throat doctor and he said I had no nodgules. I went to an allergist for post nasal drip and he stated that I had allergies but not enough to cause this to happen. So they referred me to my gastroenterologist who did another endoscopy. Now they state that I have had acid reflux this entire time. And that many people have this occur without knowing. They don't feel it but it is doing damage. Now they are saying that my case is so severe that it is affecting my vocal cords and that at this point they think it has progressed to Barrett's Disease. Which as they explain to me is a life long treatment on medication. So take it seriously if they think you possibly have acid reflux. Many people, even myself, would have doubted I had it to begin with.

Yes, I had an endoscopy recently and both doctors that read it prescribed medication for acid reflux. I told them that I had never had acid reflux. What they didn't know was that the scaring probably came from all of the vomiting that I did because of the liaisons left over in my small intestine from some medication (Dapsone) they gave me in the
1960's for DH. So,if you have had a lot of vomiting that may be your answer.

Acid reflux and IBS were my diagnosis before I asked to doctor to test me for Celiac. I have been fighting these all my life. Congrats on your healing!

Our daughter, who was diagnosed with gluten intolerance in October, has been treated for GERD for a few years with little to no improvement. She even had some scarring at the last scope. The doctor seemed to think that the GF diet would improve that. Before she was scoped the first time, she never complained about feeling anything. The doctor said your body begins to protect itself from pain by lining the esophagus with mucus (I think) so that you will not feel anything. Her reflux does seem to be getting better since being GF....hope this helps.
~~~
If there is scarring in the lower esophagus, you may have had some mild reflux that you didn't know about---maybe you called it heartburn, or it happened in your sleep.
~~~
I did not recognize that I was having acid reflux but the doctor noticed some inflamation in the esophogus during the endoscopy and asked me if I had it. When I think about it, I very well probably did have acid reflux and heart burn that I associated with the rest of my stomach problems. I did not recognize the symptoms as I considered them minor compared with the other stuff going on. I began to notice with certain foods (oranges, pineapple, tea with caffeine, soda, chocolate, some juices, cranberries, definitely coffee) sometimes seemed to bother me and did repeat. It was not major but I guess enough to irritate my espohogus. Give it some thought before you return to the doctor.
~~~
Yes, after my upper endoscope, I was asked the same question. But I was told that I had Barrett's Esopagus.  I was written a prescription for Nexium and take one every night at bedtime to help with the acid reflux that I never knew I had until then.  There is another new medicine out, which I know starts with a "p", but do not know if it is GF or not.  Time
will tell.  I go back to the Dr. May 28.  This conditiion can cause cancer of the esphagus, so don't play around with it.  Do what the Dr. says, even though you feel OK.
~~~
I have had it less than the fingers on one hand. In fact, I regularly take HCL so my food will be digested. When I had my endoscopy, the doctor commented that my esophagus looked really good.
~~~
I don't know if they have the 'why' yet, but a lot of celiacs have acid reflux.  I do and I know of a young opera singer who has it and it may end her singing career because of the damage.  I was anemic, too and what a difference the gluten-free diet has made!
~~~
I have acid reflux w/ no symptoms now other than being horse the acid had damaged my vocal cords. The doctor stated not everyone has typical symptoms and that there is a link to celiac.
~~~
Congraduations on the healing.  Yea!!!! I have acid reflex so bad that I've been diagnosed with GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease ).  Can't tell you for sure it's Celiac related, but I'm thinking it is.
~~~
I have had the procedure done three times and the last one was last Thursday.
I also had my second colonoscopy Tuesday. While doing it (EGD) he took pictures and remarked that they(stomach) looked a little red after I sobered back up and was able to talk. I will get all the results next Thursday. All previous tests have been negative. This guy is an expert and the other two including the VA are suspect.
~~~
I did not know that I had acid reflux until I had an endoscopy for the first time. The dammage was already done and I have Barrett's Esophagus. I had so many symptoms from food intolerance that I did not know I was also experiencing acid reflux. I no longer have acid reflux because I found out that I also could not tolerate carbohydrates.
