I might add that it's not "Ann Whelan's camp" who says that vinegar (other
than malt vinegar) is GF. It's every celiac organization, the dietitian's
organization, and almost all chemists and scientists (except for the ones
that one member on this list knows :) who repeatedly insist that distilled
vinegars are GF. Only the CSA used to say that it was not, but they have
also changed their stance on this last year. Since last year the CSA holds
that new celiacs should avoid vinegar till they know if they are bothered
by it personally, since it is heavy acid. But once they are stabilized and
know it doesn't bother them it is safe to eat. It doesn't have gluten in
it, even if some do react to it because of the heavy acid. Since many of us
are prone to heart burn, and some can't tell the difference between reflux
symptoms and gluten reactions, certainly vinegar can cause some distress
that may be mistaken for a gluten attack. -vance

PS. Two recent canned products that were once listed as GF, canned S&W
Green lima beans and Hormel's vegetarian no fat chili, do definitely have
gluten in them now. And I checked the Hormel list of GF stuff and found it
is no longer listed there. Damn! Hit both of them within three days. I've
spent so much time for the last four days in the smallest room that every
chair I sit on now feels like a
toilet seat :)
