i heard from quite a number of people who give themselves allergy shots,
their allergist mixes up the solution, they take it home with them. This
might be more common in less-rich areas of the usa, i have heard of it
in the South, in Texas, inthe Midwest. People are given an epipen to take
home with them in case of a reaction

It's easy to give yourself a shot, people said. But the main concern is
that you might have a bad reaction and only the epipen to deal with it.
I don't know how to assess the risk, how much better the emergency care at
the doctor's office would be than the epipen. Do you use an epipen and
call 911? How does the risk of having a reaction that would actually harm
you, compare to the risk (and hassle and money!) of traveling to the
doctor's office and getting hit by someone who skids in the snow?
Everybody takes risks, how does this one look?

i have been getting allergy shots for 18 months and i have had a terrible
time with them. People have said it's better to get them twice a week,
and i could do this at home. i have been getting sick so much from them,
it is liable to take years and years for me, and a truly monumental
expense. I'm paying cash for it all.

The other thing is, i found out last spring i'm gluten intolerant and have
a lot of other food intolerances. My allergies have gotten fiercer since
quitting those foods, but -- i hope, anyway -- this is a temporary thing,
people have told me that their allergies faded away after not eating their
culprit foods, although it sometimes took years. Going off those foods
has certainly had a drastic effect on me in other ways.
